What Is AI Website Optimization (AISO) and Why Your Business Needs It
AI crawlers are now reading your website differently than Google. AISO — AI Search Optimization — is the new frontier of digital visibility. Here’s what it means for your business.
AI website optimization AISO is the emerging practice of making your site readable and citable by AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini — and it’s becoming as important as traditional SEO.

Google is no longer the only way people find businesses online. AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude — are increasingly the first stop for product and service recommendations. Is your business showing up when they answer?
AI website optimization AISO is distinct from traditional SEO because AI crawlers don’t just look at keywords — they assess structure, authority, and clarity of information to decide whether your site is worth citing in an answer.
The rules of online visibility are changing faster than most businesses are keeping up. Traditional SEO was built around one question: how does Google rank pages? AI Search Optimization (AISO) asks a different question: how does an AI language model decide which businesses to recommend when someone asks it a question?
The answer involves different signals, different content structures, and infrastructure that almost no small business currently has in place. Here’s what’s changing and what to do about it.
AI Website Optimization AISO: How AI Crawlers Differ from Google
Google’s crawler indexes your pages and ranks them for specific keyword searches. AI crawlers — GPT-Bot (OpenAI), Claude-Web (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, and others — read your content to train models and answer questions in natural language. These are fundamentally different jobs.
When someone asks ChatGPT “who are the best web design agencies in Austin?” it’s not running a keyword search. It’s synthesizing information from everything it’s been trained on and reasoning about which businesses are credible, what they offer, and whether the information is structured in a way it can use.

- Keywords and backlinks
- Page authority and domain rating
- Click-through rate signals
- Structured meta tags
- Robots.txt crawl control
- Clear, factual content about services
- llms.txt — an AI-readable summary file
- Schema markup in JSON-LD
- Consistent brand information across the web
- Being cited by trusted sources
What Is llms.txt?
llms.txt is an emerging standard — similar in concept to robots.txt — that places a structured, plain-language summary of your website in a file that AI language models can easily read. While robots.txt tells crawlers what NOT to index, llms.txt tells AI systems what your business is, what you offer, who you serve, and how to represent you accurately.
It’s one of the simplest AISO additions you can make, and almost no local businesses have it yet. Early movers get the clearest representation in AI-generated answers.
Example: llms.txt

The 5 Core Elements of AISO
A plain-text summary of your business, services, location, and contact info placed at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Tells AI systems exactly who you are and what you offer in a format they can parse directly.
Structured data embedded in your pages that AI models and search engines can read to understand your business type, location, hours, services, and reviews. LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage schemas are the most valuable for most businesses.
Your robots.txt can now explicitly allow or deny specific AI crawlers (GPTBot, Claude-Web, PerplexityBot, etc.). Most businesses haven’t considered whether they want AI crawlers indexing their site — but you should have a deliberate policy either way.
AI models favor content that makes clear factual claims. “We install water softeners in under 6 hours” is more useful to an AI model than “We provide comprehensive water treatment solutions.” Specificity, clarity, and factual accuracy are ranking signals for AI recommendations.
Your Name, Address, and Phone number needs to be identical across every platform: your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, industry directories. Inconsistency creates confusion for both AI models and traditional search engines.
Why This Matters Now (Not in 3 Years)
ChatGPT had over 100 million users within two months of launch. Perplexity is processing over 10 million queries per day. AI-assisted search is growing faster than traditional search optimization did in the 2000s.
The businesses that implement AISO infrastructure now — while most of their competitors haven’t heard of it yet — will have a compounding advantage. The window to be an early mover is open right now. It won’t be in 18 months.
How Plopjoy Implements AISO
Every Plopjoy site build includes the full AISO foundation: llms.txt creation, AI-crawler-aware robots.txt, JSON-LD schema markup, and content structured for both human readers and AI models. We’re also available to implement this on existing sites without a full rebuild.
This isn’t experimental — it’s infrastructure. The businesses we’re building this for today are positioning themselves to be the AI-recommended option in their market when their competitors are still trying to figure out what an llms.txt file is.
Want to know if your current site is AI-crawler ready? We’ll audit your AISO setup and tell you exactly what’s missing — llms.txt, schema gaps, crawler permissions, content structure — and what it takes to fix it.
